2008 President's Message
Dr. Robina Poonawala
It
is my distinct honor and privilege
to be your President for the year
2008.
Twenty-five percent of physicians
in this country are International
Medical Graduate, an
outstanding number!
Foreign born – foreign educated physicians have played an indispensable role in the history of medicine in Texas. TMA’s new banner “Faces of Change” honors 22 Physicians (among them 3 TMA Presidents) representing all those who have come from all around the world to settle and practice medicine in Texas. Introduced at TMA’s Fall Conference in October 2007, the banner displays photographs, and highlights the contributions ranging from some of the earliest physicians to those practicing today in all regions of the state, a banner we can all be proud of.
“United we stand, divided we fall,” as the saying goes. We need to work together towards a common goal and that is to help each other and to facilitate the path for the generations to come. We can only achieve this by sheer dedication and contribution by each and every one of us in any capacity that we choose and are able.
The following are the ways you can show your commitment and dedication:
- Help us in gathering a database of physicians in each of our counties
and chapters. This can then be pooled into a central place. This way
we can reach every physician practicing or retired.
- Get politically involved. We need our representation at the local
county medical society, the Texas Medical Association, the Texas Indian
Physician Society and at the national level with the AAPI and the AMA. “Knowledge
is power” and in the process we grow forward!
- We need physician volunteers as proctors for our medical externs.
The pilot project from the Oklahoma Medical Society has shown us that
externship helps the foreign trained physicians to match into residencies
at a higher rate. We have already seen the results with 2 of our externs
matching into residency programs this year.
- Establish charitable clinics in your local areas. We have 6 so far,
in Chicago, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. Organize local community
health fairs to outreach the community. Cultural differences makes
patients more comfortable approaching us and us in understanding their
problems.
- Finally, we have an up and running website for TIPS (TIPSSW.org),
which will be user friendly and give access to a variety of information.
You may become a member by Paypal through the website.
- We encourage membership in AAPI – our national organization and in AMA. Together we can make a difference!
I urge each and every one of you to recognize the efforts of our previous leaders and current members, without whose efforts all this would not be possible.
I would like to end by inviting you all to attend our Annual AAPI meeting from June 25 to 29th in Las Vegas, Nevada. Hoping to see you all there!
